Two GP40-3 bring the Fort Smith "Dodger" into the yard at Ft Smith Arkansas. The origin of the term 'dodger' is obscure. It is said that these locals had to 'dodge' the mainline trains. Perhaps there is another explanation. None-the-less, when you hear about a dodger on your scanner, you know that the KCS is nearby.
Ft Smith was established in 1817 at the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers. It was the regions first military fort. It was named for General Thomas Smith. Today, Ft Smith is a large manufacturing center. Besides generating multiple cars of sand for the Arkansas and Missouri RR, the town hosts an operating trolley museum, the Ft Smith RR and the KCS.
As befitting its' historical nature, Ft Smith hosts a National Park Service historic site.
