This day in Railroad History
December 10, 1904
The Phoenix and Eastern Railroad completed its line between Magma and Winkelman, Arizona. The railroad was leased to the Santa Fe Railway upon completion of construction, and was operated by the ATSF subsidiary Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway. In 1907, the Phoenix & Eastern became an operating subsidiary of the SP. and operated by the Arizona Eastern Railroad. The railroad was sold to the Arizona Eastern Railroad in 1945. The Arizona Eastern Railroad was merged into SP in 1955. In summer 2006, ASARCO Copper Corporation purchased the entire railroad. Now called the Copper Basin Railway (CBRY). it operates operates from the UP at Magma, AZ and running to Winkelman - 54 miles. The CBRY also has a 7-mile branch line that runs from Ray Junction to Ray, Arizona. Its primary customer is the ASARCO Ray Copper mine.

Tunnel Motors don't pass away, they are just passed on. In the two pictures the first and third unit are ex-SP/UP are SD40T-2 tunnel motors. The middle unit is a regular SD40-2 hand-me-down from the UP. They belong to Knoxville Locomotive Works (KLWX), a subsidiary of Gulf & Ohio Railways. Gulf & Ohio is a holding company for seven US shortline railroads. KLWX maintains the locomotive fleets of the shortlines.
The pictured locomotives are KLWX 6004, 6001, and 6003. The train of maybe 100 cars (I didn't count) came off the Yadkin Valley Railroad (YVRR, a G&O shortline) and in the pictures is on the Norfolk and Southern in Winston-Salem, NC and will soon deposit its cars in the N&S's North Winston Yard at sunset.
So how many shortlines have big SD power, run 100-car trains, and use helpers (pushing) as this train did on the western end of the YVRR? The helpers? Two GP40-2LWs. And the helpers were cut off on the fly!
