The westbound City of San Francisco is stuck for days in a major snowstorm just west of Yuba Gap, CA. This train had left Reno on the 13th, but passengers finally made it to Oakland CA on January 17 via a relief train. Four rotary plows had themselves become snowbound in trying to rescue the City.

For the first time in years, Wallowa Union Railroad's Eagle Cap Excursion Train visits Joseph, Oregon, with Court Hammond's observation-platform caboose bringing up the rear on Oct. 13, 2012. There were only a few dozen passengers due to scant marketing, although Joseph merchants were optimistic about the potential to boost tourism. That's the unused Wallowa County Grain Growers elevator beside the tracks. Two months later, the rail board cancelled Hammond's contract to operate the line, citing multiple contract violations. The caboose remains at the WURR railyard in Elgin, hemmed in by other rolling stock so it can't be removed without permission.
