This day in Railroad History
January 23, 1932
Trains resumed running today on the Spreckles family owned San Diego and Arizona Railway through the Carriso Gorge after a tunnel fire. Tunnel #7 had burned in October 1931. A shoo-fly was built around the burned tunnel requiring seven 20 degree curves in 1,150 feet. This railroad had experienced a continuing series of challenges in both construction and operation over the years. By this time the heirs to the J. D. and A. B. Spreckels' estate had had enough and sold their interests in the railroad to the Southern Pacific. As a result, the San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway Company was incorporated effective February 1, 1933, as a wholly owned, separately operated subsidiary of the Southern Pacific.
