This day in Railroad HistoryFebruary 4, 1887The Interstate Commerce Act was signed into law by President Grover Cleveland. Responding to a widespread public outcry, states had passed laws that were designed to curb railroad abuses. However, in an 1886 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that state laws regulating interstate railroads were unconstitutional because they violated the Commerce Clause, which gives Congress the exclusive power "to regulate Commerce with foreign nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes" left a regulatory void that was soon filled by Congress. The following year, Congress passed the Interstate Commerce Act.

About 10 years ago I made a trip through Tacoma Washington; the amazement of the condition of the Union Station was beyond belief, from what I could see it looked like it was just built. What a beautiful tribute to the Railroad History of the area.
